2000s Critics Review Perfect Dark, Turok, Metroid: Zero Mission & Zelda: Four Swords (Switch Online)
This week’s Nintendo Direct was full of brand-new games, including Mario & Luigi: Brothership, a new Zelda-led adventure game and even the return of Metroid Prime. Best of all, they announced four massive games for the Nintendo Switch Online - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past w/ Four Swords and Metroid: Zero Mission on Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo 64 classics Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Perfect Dark. That’s cool and exciting news, but are any of these games actually worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Computer & Video Games, Next Generation and more classic magazines to see what the critics said when these games first came out. So, go and grab your favorite spy gadget, because it’s time for another hard-hitting episode o Nintendo Switch Online Review Crew.

Electronic Gaming Monthly's Top 16 Renovation Games
Переглядів 48514 годин тому
A few weeks ago, we posted a countdown looking at Working Designs’ best and worst games, and the response was near unanimous - everybody wanted to see how Renovation would fair. This, of course, was the short-lived (but much-loved) publisher that brought many of Telenet and Wolf Team’s games to the United States, and they were a personal favorite of mine when I was growing up. But what about El...
Review: NeoSprint (PlayStation 4/5, Xbox, Switch & Steam) - Defunct Games
Переглядів 2,3 тис.21 годину тому
Defunct Games reviews NeoSprint by Atari, available June 27 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Switch and PC. NeoSprint is yet another fun update from Atari. Four decades after leaving its mark in pizza parlors and bowling alleys, the Sprint series is back, and you might be surprised by how faithful it is to the arcade classic. Although it’s a bit on the easy side and is sorely mis...

Defunct Games reviews Rider's Spirits, available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch and Xbox Series X. Fans of Mode 7 racing games on the Super NES like Super Mario Kart will feel right at home playing Rider’s Spirits, a long-lost 16-bit racing game that is only now coming to America and Europe three decades late. While it’s visually a little rough and it would have been nice to have t...
Electronic Gaming Monthly's Top 20 Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein Games

This week we learned that Doom will be going back to The Dark Ages in 2025. Now that’s exciting news. And it was while drooling over that new trailer when I started to wonder what Electronic Gaming Monthly thought of the Doom series. And not just Doom, but all of those Id Soft games, including Wolfenstein 3D and Quake. Did they have a favorite? As it turns out, EGM reviewed a total of 20 games ...
1990s Critics Review Mega Man I - V on Game Boy (Nintendo Switch Online)

Mega Man fans far and wide rejoice, because Capcom has heard your calls and has brought the Blue Bomber to Nintendo Switch Online! The only downside about the Switch Online update is that for me, Four Swords is virtually unplayable, since I only have one controller and one switch, you need four controllers and four switches to be able to play it, IMHO, it would have been better if we had gotten Four Swords Adventure instead, since it is playable in one-player mode.

That zelda 4 swords game is one of my favorite games. I managed to get the 3DS digital download and have multiple 3DS units so i can play it with friends. Turok was the one early N64 game i never bought when the N64 came out. Played it for the first time like 15 years after the N64 launch and sure enough, hated it. QOTD, Favorite Spy game would be Metal Gear Solid.

I remember my mate peeing behind the arcade cabinet in the arcade we hung out in! We loved Supersprint. That, Mario, Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, Operation Wolf, Hyper Sports, Lethal Weapon 3 pinball machine, Narc, Final Fight, Colin Macrae, Daytona, Return of The Jedi and so many others. We were lucky and had so many great games. Funny to think you had to play an arcade game to get futuristic graphics now that we basically have arcade cabinets in our living rooms. Thanks for the review, you did it before many others and this game could become a cult classic 👍

I think these Review Crew videos are your best work. I really enjoy these. QOTD: Spy games? Well that's actually kind of tough for me to narrow down just one since spy games are usually also stealth/action/adventure games. I love games like Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell, Syphon Filter, most of the 007 games from the late 90s thru the mid 2000s, and I even liked 007 Blood Stone for PS3/Xbox 360.

G-Police works a treat. Go to options increase draw distance and view angle, no need to worry about frame rate though. Plays buttery smooth and looks ace. Controls are well implemented and I don't know if it's just me, but the air breaks feel proportional as well. Despite ps1 graphics, it looks the business too.

    • @DefunctGames

Sometimes game criticism comes with, well, CRITICISM. If you think I'm overly negative, then you should go look at the games that I like and see how people complain about me being to kind to the game. There's no winning. One thing you'll find is that I review games from a lot of smaller, indie studios. These are developers who have made (at most) only a couple of games, and sometimes I'm reviewing the very first thing they put out into the world. These are small, inexperienced teams, and getting honest feedback from reviews is actually really helpful. I can point to plenty of developers who have reached out in appreciation for the critique, as that is the feedback that will help make their future games better. I'm not coming at these reviews from a negative angle, and criticism is not inherently negative.

In fact, I have given most of the Recharged series good scores. My job here is to tell you what's good and bad about the game, that way you know what you're getting yourself into with each release. I am not a cheerleader.

I wouldn't hold my breath for any of Capcom's N64 titles. They have been incredibly selective when it comes to what they have offered up to NSO, careful not to conflict with any of the games they are selling in a compilation (like the console Mega Man games) or games they have recently remade (Resident Evil 2). Perhaps they'll prove me wrong.

Man, those Zero Mission and Perfect Dark commercials. Joanna doesn't even have a shower scene and Samus is in the zero suit for like 10-20 minutes tops in that stealth segment, but they sure went full tittilation when it came to the commercials... I'm looking most forward to replaying Zero Mission as I played that at a friend while growing up, but they sold it on. Really think it could be cool to see if I still like it despite it's short length. I also played Perfect Dark back in the day, but there's apparently some bugs in the game as we have yet another instance of the NSO's N64 emulation being less than stellar so I'm not going in there for some time. Now I'm just curious what the deal is with "Captain Blood"...

My favorite game of 1998 was probably Radiant Silvergun followed by Trespasser (even though it was unfinished and full of bugs, I still admire the vision and ambition). 1998 was the greatest year in gaming, I mean every platform was well represented, developers were taking the most interesting risks and ideas in game design when transitioning to 3D with incredible results, we were so damn spoiled. Plus it was also the golden age of video game magazines (GamePro, EGM, Next Generation, Ultra Game Players, Tips & Tricks, GameFan), holy crap where did my childhood go?!

Typical yanks have to have the entire story told to you unlike the uk add which is just 90s uk in tone. I wonder what everybody was thinking with that worms pinball add lol

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the upcoming Remake if you didn't know about it already.

Very very cool. Thanks for covering this in detail. Jordan is a special case, because he's so interested in documenting his own work processes and journals. Excellent stuff. :D
